This new painting is of a Male Australian Magpie

Magpies are one of the most loved Aussie birds, also they are the most feared at a certain time of year.

This 'certain time' of the year is around spring time, their breeding  period.  Magpies are very protective of their young ones and are notorious for swooping anything that comes near while the young are in the nest.

They are also notorious for being one of the friendliest backyard birds here in Australia. Many household befriend their local Magpie family and come to know them and enjoy their regular visits.

They measure 30 - 45cm and have black and white feathers, with the male featuring a completely white patch of feathers on the back of his neck. Females have a mottled grey and white patch at the back of their necks. Males are slightly bigger in size too.
